How to do Installation and termination of Electrical cables(HV, MV, LV)?

How to do Installation and Termination of Electrical cables(HV, MV, LV) :

1.Material :

All wires and cables to be examined prior to installation. No wire or cable with bruised, cut or abraded insulation, or wire that does not pass a continuity test shall be used.

2.Tools and equipment :

Truck, crane, cable drum jacks, cable drum shaft, cable socks, cable rollers, cable cutter, hydraulic crimping tools, hand crimping tools, scaffolding with wheels, ladders, torque wrench, box spanner set, ring spanner set, open end spanner set, screw driver, hack saw frame, measuring tape, drilling machines, holesaw cutter, cutting pliers.

3.Preparation :

Cables shall be identified with regard to type, size, length etc. And shall be inspected for any physical damage. The cable shall be free from any damages and the ends sealed with caps to prevent the ingress of water during transportation or storage.

4.Installation :

All cable shall be megger tested prior to pulling cable.

Prior to commencing the cable pulling, cable drums shall be set in place and all necessary equipment, tools and hardware set up to start the cable pulling.

Pull cable into position by hand, where possible using an adequate number of operative roller guides suitable positioned along cable length.

Spacing between cables to be followed for multi core cables.

Dameged cables shall be removed

5.Termination :

Before commencement of termination, cables shall be tested for insulation resistance and continuity of conductors.

Cables to be terminated shall be stripped at the termination end and the sheath along with the armour shall be removed.

Cable glands selected based on the diameter of the cable shall be fixed at the termination end of cable and fixed to the gland plates of switchbord or equipment using back nut complete with earth tags and shrouds.

In case of single core cables the gland plates shall be of non metallic materials.

The armoured of multi core cables shall be grounded to earth system at both ends through earth tags. For single core cables the earth bonding shall be only at one end.

Each core of the cables shall be cut to the required length and approved terminal ends shall be crimped at the ends using Hydraulic crimping tool. Manual crimping tools shall be used.

The cores shall be colour identified /labeled using approved markers or labels and shall be neatly dressed and supported in the terminal boxes and panels.

Cable sockets shall be correct size for type of cables.

Cable gland shall be used for terminating cables to switch gear, switch boards, motor control centres, motors and other equipment.

  2. NFPA 99 Code requires all Line Isolation Monitors (LIMs) to be tested and documented at least once every 12 months, as mention in this lim test article too.

Star Delta starter working principles, control circuit, components, advantages and disadvantages

Star delta starter working principle theory There are many different starting methods are used to start a three-phase induction motor like Star delta starter. One of them, popular and cheapest is a Direct online starter. But its use limited for smaller HP motor, to start higher rating 3 phase motors star-delta starter is used. Star-delta starter is useful where all six terminals of the motor are accessible.  we will discuss star delta starter working principle with help of power and control diagram, Theory, connection wiring diagram, parts like contactor, mcb, fuses, a timer circuit, overload relay. Star-Delta starter is the simplest starting method for reducing the inrush starting current of Induction motor. The starter can be used with all squirrel-cage induction motors that are delta-connected for normal operation.  The reduction of the high motor current causes a reduction of the starting torque of the motor. Star-delta starting is therefore especially suitable for...

Why ammeter connected in series and voltmeter connected in parallel?

Ammeter:  In series connection, the same current flows through all the components. Ammeter aims at measuring the current flowing through the circuit and hence, it is connected in series: so that the same current that is there in the circuit flows through it and gets measured. Ammeter has a low resistance, because we do not want to change the current that is flowing through the circuit. Voltmeter:   Voltmeter measures voltage change between two points in a circuit. So u have to place the meter probes at these two points, without removing the portion of circuit between the probes (or else you change the circuit). This then, by definition, places the voltmeter in parallel with the section of circuit between the probes. When you place the meter probes at the two points you want to measure, a tiny portion of the current in the circuit will now go thru the meter and give you a reading. We make the voltmeter a very high resistance instrument. So when the current splits into the...
